Synopsis: This is an intimate portrait of Sam Hernández—a multifaceted artist with roots in the car culture of California and a deep curiosity about global fine and folk art traditions. Through interviews with the artist, collectors, friends, and colleagues, enhanced by archival photographs and footage, the film follows Sam’s path from curious youth to a master of woodcarving, drawing, painting, ceramics, and metal work. Sam is filmed in his rural home and studio in California as well as his home in Spain, country of his ancestors. Surrounded by objects that inspired his work—indigenous art forms and non-art implements from a broad range of cultures—he speaks of his varied influences, his commitment to craft, and a lifetime of self-directed studies that led to his prowess with tools and materials and the freedom to create a conceptually rich body of work.
