Synopsis: The Final Bow follows master bowmaker Christophe Landon, celebrated cellist Coleman Itzkoff, and Brazilian conservationists. At the heart of their story is pernambuco, a rare wood found only in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. For centuries, it has been used to make the finest stringed instrument bows. But the forest is disappearing, and the tree is on the brink of extinction. As the Brazilian government moves to upgrade it to the highest level of international protection, conservationists fight to protect the remaining trees from illegal logging. But musicians fear that greater restrictions will mean they lose the tool that connects their souls to their music, while not actually helping to save the species. The film explores the collision of regulation, environmental conservation, and art. It questions the effectiveness of the proposed upgrade, and asks what will happen to classical music if one of its most vital tools is banned across borders.
