FILMMAKER Q&A – Nancy Margulies – Producer, Illustrator

GS: What was the inspiration for your film?

NM: I was inspired by the members of my family who survived exile to Siberia and homelessness in Uzbekistan, emerging grateful for being alive and aware of how important it is to pay attention to changes in our own country, let we go the way of “Big Lies” rule.

GS: When did you conceive the idea for your film and how long did it take before it was realized?

NM: It was many years before I had the time and opportunity to create this film. And 2 years to produce it.

GS: What was the most challenging aspect of working in a short film format?

NM: I wanted to keep the action and imagery engaging throughout and tell a complex story in a concise manner. 

GS: What was the most challenging aspect of your production?

NM: The most challenging aspect was locating the right archival footage.

GS: Do you have any advice for first-time filmmakers?

NM: Keep on making films, no matter what. Your skills will evolve as you go.
