FILMMAKER Q&A: Ryan Horner – Director, DP, Editor

GS: What was the inspiration for your film?

RH: Seeing and hearing about unhappy people in marriage along with working in commercials gave me the inspiration to come up with an idea of how to find that spark again.  Through adventure, difficulty, and finding yourself again though “who we use to be” before marriage can reinvigorate ourselves to be “in love” again.

So, I came up with the idea for The Chase, where people chase each other around the globe in search of each other.

GS: When did you conceive the idea for your film and how long did it take before it was realized?

RH: I conceived the idea about 15 years again while living in Los Angeles and working in post production commercials.

GS: What was the most challenging aspect of working in a short film format?

RH: There was so much dialogue and a lot more scenes that we had to pair it down to tell the most effective story.  Consequently we’ve been turned down by other festivals by not having dialogue but others have recognized the difficulty in creating a through line with very little dialogue. So cutting it down and taking out all of the hard work, to “kill your darlings” was the hardest.

GS: What was the most challenging aspect of your production?

RH: All the locations, no money!

GS: Do you have any advice for first-time filmmakers?

RH: You just have to get up and do it, even if you only film 5 seconds of your film in 2 hours.  Just do it.  You’ll get momentum.
